Regular [non-high security] keys stamped with “DO NOT COPY” can usually be copied.
The provincial government changed the law to allow for duplicating “DO NOT COPY” keys.
One of the reasons the law was changed was due to the inability to substantiate legitimate ownership of the keys and where those keys might fit.
However, although it is legally allowable to cut “DO NOT COPY” keys, many “big-box” stores have a company policy not to duplicate “DO NOT COPY” keys.
HIGH SECURITY KEYS:
High Security locks, such as Medeco or Mul-t-Lock, are top of the line security hardware.
Locksmith companies who subscribe to Medeco and Mul-t-Lock hardware get their own “keyway.” This means that one locksmith’s Medeco or Mul-t-Lock keys may not be the same as another locksmith’s Medeco or Mul-t-Lock keys.
The laws governing Locksmiths in regards to High Security keys and locks, state that we can only provide duplicate High Security keys for those that are the registered owners of those keys.
If you have purchased a home (or business) with Mul-t-Lock or Medeco locks and you want to get more keys, you will need to either get the previous owner to transfer the ownership of the High Security lock system to you, or you will need to REKEY the locks to new keys and re-register the system to your name.
